Common oven problems

Oven thermostat is not working properly

If you notice that your electric oven isn’t heating up to the correct temperature and food comes out under-cooked, this many be caused by a defective electric oven thermostat. Thermostats measure the temperature inside the oven cavity, switching the electric element on and off to maintain the desired temperature.

Oven issue with self cleaning

While the convenience of simply pushing a button and getting a clean oven is certainly attractive, there are trade-offs you might want to consider before pressing “start.” Fumes can be irritating to those with respiratory problems, and the extreme heat of the self-cleaning process can be damaging to oven parts.

Oven door won’t shut

If you’re unable to open the oven door when the self-cleaning is over, your door lock/motor assembly may be malfunctioning. First, try to “reboot” the oven by unplugging it, waiting 5 minutes, and plugging it back in: sometimes this resets the lock and your oven door will be back to normal.

Oven not turning on

If the temperature control thermostat becomes defective, it can stop your oven from turning on. This doesn’t happen often, but if the igniter is working, your best option might be to simply replace the temperature control thermostat and see if that solves the problem.

Oven won’t heat

How do I know if my oven element is burnt out?
The heating element you’re checking should be bright orange when fully heated (about 10 minutes after it’s set to 350 degrees). This shows it’s functioning normally. If it isn’t bright orange, or if only parts of it are, this probably means the element is burned out and needs to be replaced.

Oven can’t maintain temperature

Although the oven will take a bit longer to heat up, once it reaches temperature, that temperature will remain more stable, since the stone acts as a buffer between the oven’s heat source and your food.

Trouble maintaining temperature

Poikilothermia refers to the inability to regulate core body temperature. Clinically, poikilothermia can be manifested by hypothermia (core temperature less than 35°C/95°F) or hyperthermia (core temperature > 37.8°C /100°F)

Oven Failure to turn on

If you find yourself with an oven that will not turn on, the first thing you should determine is if the oven is at fault or if perhaps a circuit breaker has been tripped. If the power supply to the oven is not responsible, the next thing to check is if the oven’s heating elements are at fault.

Oven door does not close properly

Look for the bolts that secure your hinges to the door or to the oven. If they are loose, use a screwdriver or nut driver to tighten them so that the hinges are kept from wobbling and, therefore, hold the oven door in better alignment to close completely. It’s also possible that your hinges are bent but otherwise fine.

Oven knob won’t turn

If your oven knob is not turning, the problem is likely with the peg shaft or the knob cap. To begin fixing the issue, you need to take the knob handle off. To get the knob off, gently pull it off with your hand or ease it off with a butter knife. Now that the knob is off, you can take a look at the peg shaft.

When turned on, a well-functioning oven should have its fan evenly distribute heat that is radiated by the heating element. However, if there’s a fault in either the heating element or the fan, this interferes with the ideal and optimal heating of your oven.

Oven not heating properly

An oven that won’t heat is usually the result of a faulty igniter (for a gas oven) or heating element (for an electric oven). If both your gas oven and your gas burners have stopped working, the problem is most likely with the gas line, and will require professional repair.

Error code on the oven panel

Turn off the breaker in your home’s electrical service panel and leave it off for a full 30 seconds. Then, turn the breaker back on. In addition to resetting your oven, this measure will force your oven to double-check its own diagnosis. If there’s no error in the unit, the error code will disappear after a reset.

There are a couple locations where the model and the serial number of your oven can be. Your oven should be labeled either behind the door, on the left leg behind the drawer, under the cooktop (lift-up styles) and inside the drawer (front frame).

Why doesn’t my oven cook properly?

In most cases, your oven isn’t cooking properly because of 3 elements: the igniter, the bake element or the broil element. When the bake element works properly, it looks red hot.
