How To Deal With Broken AppliancesA broken appliance isn’t something anyone really wants to deal with. In the first place, the problems can vary wildly from one appliance to the next. There are minor and severe problems alike that are completely unique to something like a broken fridge, or a broken washer. The same can be said for a broken oven, a broken dryer, or just about anything else you can imagine. The problem can come down a number of possibilities. Just figuring out the specific problem can be difficult enough. This doesn’t even get into figuring out whether or not the appliance is really broken, or choosing between replacement work and repair work.

Thankfully, at MAAR24 Appliance Repair, we can help. Regardless of what we are dealing with, we can offer appliance repair solutions that can restore life and vitality to your fridge, washer, dryer, oven, or anything else you may have. We can get right to the heart of the problem, and we can help you to decide between repair and replacement.

If you need to get rid of a broken appliance, there are a few things you will want to keep in mind. Combine this with knowing how to determine if an appliance is really broken, and you should have everything you need to deal with most problems as they arise.

Is My Appliance Really Broken?

To start with, you will need to figure out whether or not the appliance is really broken. This may seem obvious with something like a broken fridge or broken oven, but the truth of the matter is that just because something seems broken, it doesn’t mean you are indeed dealing with a broken appliance. Something like a broken washer may just be a matter of a small part that needs to be replaced.

While we can definitely help you to figure out if your appliance is really broken, there are also a few things you can do on your own:

  • Make sure the appliance is still plugged in. This sounds like common sense, but it is still worth exhausting every possibility.
  • Make sure the circuit breakers haven’t been tripped.
  • Make sure the flooring hasn’t become uneven. Believe it or not, but this can actually cause some appliances to stop working!
  • Make sure your vents and/or filters haven’t become clogged with dirt, dust, and debris.

Once you’ve exhausted all of the above, check the warranty status on the appliance in question. A good plan will over parts and labor coverage for 1-2 years.

It also helps to have a general idea of the lifespan of a specific appliance, in terms of appliance repair:

  • Compactors: Six years
  • Dishwashers: Nine years
  • Disposals: Twelve years
  • Dryers: Thirteen years
  • Exhaust fans: Ten years
  • Freezers: Eleven years
  • Microwaves: Nine years
  • Range (electric): Thirteen years
  • Range (gas): Fifteen years
  • Range/oven hoods: Fourteen years
  • Fridges: Thirteen years
  • Washers: Ten years

After those points, it is entirely possible that mere age has given way to broken washer or broken oven. On the other hand, if you have only had your fridge for a couple of years, it doesn’t seem likely that you have a broken fridge.

How To Deal With Broken Appliances

If your appliance is beyond the point of repair or minor replacement work, then it is time to figure out the best method for disposal. Beyond the potential of appliance repair, here are a few things you can do with an appliance that is broken once and for all:

  • Return to the manufacturer.
  • Sell the broken appliance, which is an option more than you might think.
  • Donate the appliance to someone who will repurpose it.
  • Selling broken appliances to a metal recycler is certainly an option.
  • Most local municipalities have an appliance disposal program.
