Common Dishwasher Issues We Repair

Need to repair your dishwasher? MAAR24 Appliance Repair is here to help. We can solve all of your dishwasher problems, big or small, so give us a call today and let us take care of common dishwasher issues, such as:

Dishwasher is overflowing

The float in your dishwasher rises as the water level in the appliance increases. When the float reaches a certain level, it signals the float switch to turn the flow of water off. If the float becomes stuck and can not rise, the float switch will not be activated, and your dishwasher will overflow.

Dishwasher is not getting water

If you notice leaks around the dishwasher when it’s not running or your dishwasher is filling very slowly or not at all, then this valve might be broken. It usually costs around $80 to $125 to replace the water inlet valve.

Dishes not coming out dry

Many dishwashers use a vent to release the hot, steamy air generated during the rinse cycle. If the vent does not open properly, the dishwasher will leave moisture on the dishes. Check the vent to ensure that it is functioning correctly.

Dishwasher not starting

Turn the power off and back on. If that doesn’t work, check the manufacturer’s instructions for resetting the dishwasher. You may have to press and hold the start button, or unplug the machine for a minute or two. After resetting, you’ll be able to start a new wash cycle.

Dishwasher failing to drain

It’s likely the result of a full garbage disposal that won’t allow the drain water to enter from the machine, so it backs up in the bottom of the dishwasher. Barring that, the problem is probably a kink in the drain hose, or a clog in the hose, the drain, or the air gap.

Strange dishwasher noises

Dishwashers have components, so it’s normal for them to make some noise during operations. But if the noise gets strange and loud, it could be an indication of technical failures such as seized drain pump, clogged filter, faulty fan, and motor, etc.

Dishes not coming out clean

If your dishes aren’t spotless, the first step is to clean the interior of your machine. Pour 3 cups of white vinegar in the bottom and run a full wash cycle. The vinegar helps remove gunk from the holes in the spray arm, dissolves light mineral buildup, and cleans grease from the interior walls.

Error code on the dishwasher panel

The AE or E1 error code indicates a possible leak from the unit. This message is usually the result of an overflow, caused by either the unit not being level or the wrong type or amount of detergent.

Dishwasher soap dispenser doesn’t work

The Most Common Reason Your Dishwasher Soap Dispenser Isn’t Opening. The dispenser may be blocked. Check to see if there’s detergent in the dispenser or on the bottom of the tub after the cycle. Tall items like cookie sheets and cutting boards placed in the lower rack can block the dispenser door.

Dishwasher is not turning off

A dishwasher that continues to cycle may have a bad heating element, faulty timer motor or malfunctioning thermostat. All of these devices signal the dishwashing unit that the job for one cycle is done, at which point it moves on to the next task.

Dishwasher door not latch
Dishwasher Installed Not Correctly Or Tub Misaligned.
Door Latch Malfunctioned.
Dishwasher Top Or Bottom Racks Doesn’t Set Properly.
Door Striker Misaligned.

Dishwasher lights flashing

If the dishwasher is set for a delay start and the door is unlatched, the cycle-selected indicator lights will continuously flash and the delay countdown will stop until you latch the door. The Delay start option will run the dishwasher at a later time or during off-peak hours.

Dishwasher doesn’t clean properly

Simply pour three cups of white vinegar in the bottom of the empty dishwasher and select the longest cycle. The vinegar will dissolve light mineral buildup and clean gunk from the holes in the spray arm. It will also remove residual grease from the interior walls so dishes will be cleaner and smell better.

Dishwasher doesn’t dispense soap

The Most Common Reason Your Dishwasher Soap Dispenser Isn’t Opening. The dispenser may be blocked. Check to see if there’s detergent in the dispenser or on the bottom of the tub after the cycle. Tall items like cookie sheets and cutting boards placed in the lower rack can block the dispenser door.

Dishwasher smells bad

The most common cause of dishwasher odor is a dirty filter. Food particles get trapped in your dishwasher’s filter, and without regular cleaning, your filter can start smelling foul.

Dishwasher doesn’t dry dishes

If your dishwasher is not drying during the appropriate cycle, make sure that the rinse aid dispenser—generally located on the interior door, right next to the detergent dispenser—is full. If not, remove the cap on the dispenser and pour in enough rinse aid until the indicator shows it’s full.

Dishes come out dirty

If your dishwasher is not self-cleaning, it most likely has a manual filter, designed to trap food debris. When the filter becomes clogged, the dishwasher continues to recirculate dirty water, resulting in small bits of stuck-on food and potentially smelly dishes.

Will not run or has no power

Reset the fuse or circuit breaker in your home that provides power to the dishwasher. For more information, see our Dishwasher – Checking Fuse or Circuit Breaker or Dishwasher – Reset Circuit Breaker articles. The dishwasher may be installed with a power cord that has come loose. Not all dishwashers have a power cord.

Dishwasher leaks from bottom

Detergents and minerals can corrode the bottom of your tub, causing water to seep through and collect under your dishwasher. It’s possible to fix some tubs, but depending on the age of your unit and the severity of the problem, you may need to replace your dishwasher entirely.

Error code on the electronic panel

Although furnace error codes differ between brands, all the most popular furnace brands use a system of blinking lights to communicate error codes. To read a furnace error code, locate the LED light and note its blinking pattern. Be sure to count how many times the light flashes and to note how quickly it’s blinking.

Dishwasher won’t dry dishes

If your dishwasher is not drying during the appropriate cycle, make sure that the rinse aid dispenser—generally located on the interior door, right next to the detergent dispenser—is full. If not, remove the cap on the dispenser and pour in enough rinse aid until the indicator shows it’s full.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

My dishwasher doesn’t drain properly. What should I do?

The most common cause of draining issues when it comes to dishwashers is food residue clogging the dishwasher’s drain hose and/or pump strainer. You can try to clean and unclog the drain hose. You would first have to disconnect it from the pump. If this doesn’t work, it might be best for you to call a dishwasher repair technician to diagnose and fix the issue.

Why won’t my dishwasher start?

A common reason why your dishwasher won’t start is the door. If the latches on the doors are bad, the machine won’t start because it needs them to hold a strong grip in order to prevent water spillage. An expert is dishwasher repairs can help you determine what the problem is in no time.

How do I make sure my dishwasher will wash properly?

To get the best results possible, you should always try to scrape off any food residue and load the machine according to the guide written by the manufacturer.

Why doesn’t my dishwasher wash well?

If your dishwasher doesn’t wash well, the solution can be as simple as cleaning it. Another reason why you’re getting dirty dishes after the cycle might be a faulty or clogged inlet valve.

My dishwasher has started to leak. What do I do?

Dishwasher leaks usually come from the door. The problem may be a pump that is broken or a faulty door gasket. Damage to pumps usually comes from age and detergent.

What should I do to maintain my dishwasher?

To keep your dishwasher working well, you should do the following:

Get rid of mildew.
Use an acid (ie. lemon juice or tang) to get rid of build up.
Unclog and clean your dishwasher’s drain.
Clean the edges and the exterior of your dishwasher.
Clean the spinning arms.
Wash your dishwasher regularly.

How do I know which dishes are dishwasher safe?

Before putting any kind of material in your dishwasher, you should always check with the manufacturer’s guide to see if it’s dishwasher safe. Materials such as aluminum and glass are mainly dishwasher safe, but disposable aluminum items, bottles, and cans are not.

My dishwasher is making strange noises. What can I do?

If you ever hear weird noises coming from your dishwasher, the cause may be as simple as it not being fastened to the floor or cabinet properly. On the other hand, the problem may arise from issues such as faulty motor assembly and dishwasher pump.

Why is my dishwasher not drying my dishes?

If your dishwasher is not drying your dishes during a cycle, it could be because you did not set the correct wash, dry or heat setting.

Why are my dishes coming cloudy and smudgy?

If your dishes are coming out of your dishwasher looking cloudy, it could be because of mineral deposits (which can be cleared with vinegar), a clogged drain, water temperature, excessive or limited detergent, or gel detergents.

How can I avoid dishwasher breakdowns?

There are a couple of things you can do to avoid frequent dishwasher repairs and make it last as long as possible. First, you should never overload it. The dishes will not come out clean and you will have to repeat the cycle, thus causing more tear to the unit. The second thing is not to go overboard with dishwasher soap. By using a moderate amount of soap, you will avoid the buildup that causes the motor/pump work twice as hard.
